MBP M1 Max really slow on external monitor (GPU?)

Hey all

I'm on a maxed out 14" MBP and motive wave runs super fast when on my primary laptop screen, but running a desktop externally it really gets bogged down.
Looking at Activity Monitor the GPU % being used by MotiveWave goes up to 90% -- which seems super high. The CPU load sits at negligible with 8-10% user load.

I'm wondering if there are any optimizations possible (maybe JVM args?) that could improve performance having more things open in MotiveWave.

Please and thank you!

Cheers.

out of curiosity, what's the resolution settings for the external monitor? is that higher than the laptop screen? if so what if you match the resolution would you get the same speed? what's the GPU load with the laptop screen only?

cheers.

the external monitor is QHD 49" -- so 5120×1440 (higher than the laptop)
It could be that it's pushing the limits. I'll try comparing later on.

the odd thing is that the rest of my operating system is still buttery smooth -- only MW is slowed down. That's probably OSX just preventing me from killing my own performance, though.

if the issue only with the MW than my guess is that the JVM not working well with the M1 architecture.
